NorthStar and AmeriCorps Install 100th House Number
When house numbers are clearly displayed time is saved in an emergency
April 20, 2012
NorthStar, with its AmeriCorps partnership, recently installed its 100th house number sign, NorthStar’s David Robie announced. Heather Rhinhart, formerly an AmeriCorps volunteer and now a NorthStar EMT, began the house number project in the summer of 2011. When house numbers are clearly displayed and visible from the road, time is saved in an emergency.
The 100th sign went to Warren and Lucille Hood for their camp in East Madrid. The Hoods, owners of Splash in Turner, wanted to be sure they could be found in an emergency while they were at the camp.
Along with local NorthStar staff, Heather spearheaded preparing and installing house number signs throughout the Unorganized Territories of Madrid, Freeman and Salem. The project has been taken over by AmeriCorps volunteer Mani Jean-Louis with help from the crews at the NorthStar Phillips Base.
Robie went on to say, “Emergency response crews, whether they be ambulance, fire or law enforcement, cannot find you if your house number is not clearly displayed. Unfortunately, many house numbers are not visible from the street—especially at night. Poorly displayed house number could cost you precious time in an emergency.” He also said how gratifying it was that so many people have taken advantage of getting their house number displayed.
The approved signs have white numbers on a blue background and are being offered to UT homeowners/renters at the lowest possible cost. NorthStar will help with the installation at no charge. Robie added, “Although we’ve received requests from residents in other towns, right now we are focusing on Madrid, Freeman and Salem Townships. At some point in the future, we hope to open it up to all the UTs that NorthStar covers.”
To get started, all one needs to do is give NorthStar a call at their Phillips Base at 639-3830and request an order form. Signs are $8.50 each. Order forms may also be picked up at the NorthStar Phillips base on Park Street in Phillips.
Robie concluded, “Give yourself the best chance to be found by emergency workers!”
