NorthStar and AmeriCorps Coordinate E911 House Numbers
Signs will enable faster response in Madrid, Freeman, and Salem
June 1, 2011
Do you live in Madrid, Freeman or Salem? Could emergency workers easily find your house? NorthStar EMS is working on a solution in select unorganized territories (UTs) that can facilitate emergency response for ambulances, fire departments, and the sheriff’s department.
Emergency response crews cannot find you if your house number is not clearly displayed. “Unfortunately a majority of E911 compliant house numbers are not visible from the street—specially at night,” said David Robie, NorthStar director. “Poorly displayed house number could cost you precious time in an emergency. And it’s the law that correct numbers must be clearly displayed.”
NorthStar EMT Jane Thorndike remembers a recent call in one of the UTs, "We were called out for a man having trouble breathing. While we were trying to find his house, dispatch told us that the man had become unconscious. I will never forget how frightened I was for him, when we couldn’t find his house number anywhere on the road. Fortunately, a neighbor called back and had us follow him down an unmarked driveway. Once we got to the house, we did find a house number, but it was of no help because we couldn’t see it from the road."
Whether you own or rent a home or camp in Madrid, Salem, or Freeman townships, you may need emergency help and emergency staff want to be able to find you! NorthStar EMS and AmeriCorps are teaming up to coordinate distribution of E911 house numbers signs in these areas. The approved signs have white numbers on a blue background and are being offered at the lowest possible cost. In addition, NorthStar will help with the installation at no charge.
