Mapping Our Footsteps Grant Initiative Looking for Volunteers

January 15, 2010

Healthy Community Coalition (HCC) has received a $75,000 grant that focuses on health and the local natural environment from the Environmental Funders Network. The Center for Community GIS, a partner in the project, will map local trails and historical sites, train volunteers, and create a public Web site.

"The project will allow us to develop and market the quality of place we call Greater Franklin County by exposing both youth and adults to the region's natural resources, revealing our cultural heritage and promoting physical activity," said Heather Davis, HCC executive director.

Volunteers are currently being sought to help map local trails using geographic (GPS) units. Interested groups, classes, or families will receive free training on how to use the GPS units. An informational meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 9, at the HCC offices in Farmington from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m..

"This is an excellent project for community groups and families. It gets you outside walking, hiking, and enjoying all the beauty of western Maine. And it’s free,” said Lorri Brown, program coordinator.
