Healthy Community Coalition Awarded $32,000 Susan G. Komen Foundation Grant for Breast Cancer Awareness
June 21, 2007
The Healthy Community Coalition has received a $32,000 grant from the Maine Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Foundation to implement a 1-year project to increase breast cancer education and screenings in the Greater Franklin County area. Healthy Community Coalition in collaboration with Franklin Memorial Hospital and NorthStar Ambulance will gather and analyze county-wide screening, education and needs data from women age 40 and over, and develop and implement a comprehensive response plan to address identified needs.
This will include a series of focus groups involving Franklin County women who have never had a mammogram and a telephone outreach initiative designed to assist in meeting the needs of women in this region. Assistance will be offered to decrease the impact of barriers that prevent women from participating in breast cancer screenings such as lack of adequate transportation, insurance, financial barriers or knowledge.
- First focus group: Eustis Community Building, Monday, July 9th, 5:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.
- Second focus group: Franklin Memorial Hospital, Forster Room, Wednesday, July 12th, 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Participants will receive a light dinner and $50 each for their time and participation. Pre-Registration is required as each group will be limited to 10 participants.
Women over 40 who have not had a mammogram may call to register at the Healthy Community Coalition at 645-3136 or 1-800-525-3136 ext. 5102.
The Healthy Community Coalition, an affiliate of the Franklin Community Health Network, is a comprehensive, community-based health promotion, education, outreach and prevention organization serving West Central Maine.
