Coalition Recognizes Businesses as Community Leaders Promoting Good Health

The awards were presented at their respective Chamber of Commerce meetings. The Work Healthy! program encourages businesses and organizations in Greater Franklin County to support tobacco-free lifestyles and promote physical activity and healthy eating.
Those taking part in the program have come to realize that a healthier workforce is beneficial to all involved. For the employer this translates into reduced absenteeism, lower health care costs, improved productivity, and healthy, happier employees.
Organizations taking part in Work Healthy! this year included: Androscoggin Bank, Jay Town Office, Paris Farmers Union, Community Concepts, SAD #36, Maine DOT Region 3, Hannaford Supermarkets in Jay and Farmington, Verso Paper, Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice, Turner Publishing, Franklin Savings Bank, Star Barn, United Way of Tri Valley Area, University of Maine at Farmington, Mt. Blue Regional School District, Notify MD, LEAP, Work First, Bangor Savings Bank, Camden National Bank, Seniors Plus, Sun Journal, Western Maine Community Action, Franklin Community Health Network, and TD Banknorth.
Awards ranged in levels from Merit recognition for a basic tobacco policy, to Bronze and Silver awards presented to applicants who submitted for all category areas. Many businesses said they are going for the Gold in 2010.
Healthy Community Coalition provides worksites with free technical assistance, educational materials, and support to employers to promote healthy behaviors and lifestyles.
