Garden to Honor Breast Cancer Awareness

In honor of efforts developed at Franklin Memorial Hospital by the Martha B. Webber Breast Care Center and the Oncology department, space has been designated for the establishment of a tulip and iris garden, which when completed will symbolize breast cancer, strength and love, and other cancers.
The iris and tulip garden will be located in front of the new Franklin Health Medical Arts Building, at the center of its circular entrance. “The iris was chosen as it is the flower of the Breast Center and demonstrates strength and courage, while the tulip’s meaning is perfect love,” said Rita Porter, an employee who has volunteered to lead the project. “A heart of pink tulips will be planted to represent those who have had breast cancer, while a multicolored tulip ring will represent other cancers.”
Representatives from the Breast Care Center, the Radiology department, Franklin Health Access, Healthy Community Coalition, the Mt. Blue Garden Club, Community Concepts, the breast cancer support group, and the community-at-large have all committed to help with the project. The minimum goal is to raise $500 for a 10 by 10-foot garden.
Bulbs may be purchased for a nominal fee of $1 each in honor of, in support of, or in memory of a person with cancer. The planting of the garden will take place in the fall.
