NorthStar Providers Recognized

May 23, 2008

NorthStar recently held its annual Recognition and Awards evening banquet to honor its staff of Emergency Medical Technicians. NorthStar is the Ambulance Service of Franklin Memorial Hospital and operates throughout the Greater Franklin County. The banquet closed out National Emergency Medical Services Week.

Highlighting the evening was NorthStar’s “EMT of the Year” Award. This award recognizes an employee for going “above and beyond” system-wide during the year. To great applause, the overall EMT of the Year was bestowed on Donald Salm. Don’s dedication to NorthStar, his support of the AmeriCorps program, his willingness to cover shifts wherever and whenever asked, to respond from his home in Phillips at night, his work at all the NorthStar bases led to this obvious selection. During the short time three years that Don has been a part of NorthStar, he has quickly risen from Driver to EMT-B, to EMT-I and is now getting his Paramedic license.

In presenting the award, NorthStar’s Executive Director, David Robie commented, “Don does not do anything halfway! In all things, Don exemplifies NorthStar’s Mission: in his professionalism, his respectful patient care, his positive community activities, good stewardship of our resources and overall excellence. We are very fortunate to have such an outstanding EMT in our service.”

NorthStar also recognized Paramedic Carol Pillsbury for being awarded the Governor’s Award at a ceremony at the Hall of Flags in Augusta earlier in the week. Carol, a long serving paramedic for NorthStar, is also NorthStar’s training coordinator and main organizer of EMS Week activities. She was given the Governor’s Award for her dedication and untiring support to EMS at the local, regional and state level spanning the almost three decades of her career.

Other awards were also given out during the ceremony. Other “Above and Beyond” awards were bestowed on Greg Drummond, Justin Hurlburt, Carol Pillsbury, Chuck Twitchell, Jeremy O’Neil, Peter Wade, Peggy Betts, Carl Blondell, Dennis Kerrigan, Becky Morin, and Conley Gould for their extra efforts during the year. “400 Club” Awards (for 400+ runs in a year) went to Stan Wilcox, Justin Hurlburt and Don Salm. Most active Per Diem was bestowed on Ed Strapp. Several other awards, some serious, some humorous were also given out. Each and every member of the NorthStar staff was recognized as a contributor to the success of the system.

In reflecting on the ceremonies, Director Robie remarked, “We join with Maine EMS and the Governor in congratulating Carol on her state award. And it is clear that our entire NorthStar staff truly exemplify the best in EMS. We are proud of their accomplishments and pleased that we can honor them in this way. Our service is only as good at the professional EMTs that respond day in and day out. The high caliber of our crews combined with the strengths of a regional NorthStar system means we can look forward to continuing to provide the highest level or emergency medical services to our communities.”
