Physicians in Rural Practice Symposium to Focus on Care of the Obese Patient

Health care clinicians should mark their calendars now for the annual Physicians in Rural Practice Symposium taking place on Friday, March 28, at Franklin Memorial Hospital's Ben Franklin Center in Farmington.
This year's symposium is entitled Treating the Whole Patient: The Complexities of Obesity in a Rural Setting and is targeted to all health care professionals who work in rural Maine, including doctors, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, and students in the health care field.
The keynote lecture is named after the late Dr. Paul Brinkman, a rural practice role model. The keynote speaker will be Gary Taubes, an American journalist who has written about science, medicine, and health for Science, Discover, the Atlantic Monthly, The New York Times Magazine, Esquire, and a host of other publications.
Taubes is the author of recent book, Good Calories, Bad Calories: Challenging the Conventional Wisdom on Diet, Weight Control, and Disease, which examines the enormous body of research done over the past century connecting diet, exercise, and disease risk. He tracks the origins of commonly accepted dietary advice and aims to show that advice given to the public on obesity and heart disease risk often contradicts scientific evidence. Taubes has won numerous awards for his reporting and is the only print journalist to have won three Science in Society Journalism awards, given by the National Association of Science Writers.
Also featured will be a panel discussion and breakout sessions on:
- Starting the Conversation with the Patient with Barbara Thompson, MLS
- Management of Patient Centered Care with Dr. Jean Antonucci
- When to Refer and Why with Dr. Huy Trieu
- Good Calories, Bad Calories with Gary Taubes
The program will include ample time for networking among participants. A tuition fee includes the program, continuing education credits, continental breakfast, refreshments, and lunch.
This program is funded by Franklin Memorial Hospital's Area Health Education Center (AHEC), a member of the Maine AHEC Network, which is supported by a grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration. Registration deadline is March 21.
