Evergreen Adds Eating Disorders Treatment to its Services
January 22, 2008

Evergreen Behavioral Services has recently added treatment for eating disorders to the spectrum of mental health services that the organization provides. Eating disorders are characterized by a preoccupation with weight that results in severe disturbances in eating and other behaviors.
Psychiatrist Dr. Lourdes Soto-Moreno oversees the new program. Dr. Soto-Moreno brings a wealth of knowledge of psychotherapy, medication management, and the spectrum of medical problems that coexist with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, compulsive eating, and self-esteem and body image issues.
Signs and symptoms of eating disorders may include: weight loss, sometimes achieved by self-induced vomiting, abuse of laxatives, use of diuretics or exercise; an intense fear of gaining weight; an unhealthy focus on body shape and weight; and not wanting to eat meals with the family.
“Seeking medical advice often comes only at the insistence of a family member or friend,” said Dr. Soto-Moreno. “If you notice the signs and symptoms of an eating disorder in a family member or friend, urge that person to make an appointment.”
During the initial evaluation, Dr. Soto-Moreno reviews medical history, evaluates current symptoms, discusses treatment options, and addresses client questions. Detailed questions about eating, dieting behavior, body image, and emotional issues associated with disordered eating are asked. This in-depth intake process allows Dr. Soto-Moreno to effectively tailor treatment plans and make recommendations to meet individual needs.
Evergreen’s eating disorders program is affiliated with the New England Eating Disorders Program at Mercy Hospital in Portland. Staffed by nurses, therapists, nutritionists, and physicians, Mercy offers the only comprehensive in-patient program for eating disorders in Maine.
In addition to eating disorders treatment, Evergreen Behavioral Services provides outpatient counseling, medication management, substance abuse treatment, 24-hour emergency services, and on-site counseling in schools, physician practices, the Franklin County Jail, and at Franklin Memorial Hospital Outpatient Services in Livermore Falls.
Evergreen Behavioral Services’ main offices are located in the Mt. Blue Health Center, next to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington. For an appointment call 778-0035.
