FMH to Offer the Latest Technology: Digital Mammography
April 17, 2008
Women who undergo routine mammograms at the Martha B. Webber Breast Care Center at Franklin Memorial Hospital (FMH) and at FMH Outpatient Services in Livermore Falls will soon have the latest diagnostic technology available to them--digital mammography. FMH will be the first healthcare provider in Greater Franklin County to feature this state-of-the-art system.
"Demand for digital mammography is high, and women are excited and pleased that we can begin offering this state-of-the-art technology in July," said mammography supervisor Sue Dalrymple RTR(M), CBEC. "Digital mammography feels identical to conventional screening from a patient's perspective, though women may notice shorter exam times and a reduction in call-backs to obtain additional images."
Mammography, which is an x-ray procedure, is the most effective technique for early detection of breast cancer according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. It can often locate small tumors and abnormalities up to two years before they can be detected by touch. If breast cancer is detected early, its prognosis improves dramatically and allows for more treatment options.
Digital mammography uses computers and specially designed digital detectors to produce incredibly sharp images that can be displayed on a high-resolution computer monitor. Digital mammography is different from conventional mammography in how the image of the breast is viewed and, more importantly, manipulated. The radiologist can magnify and adjust the contrast of the images to allow the radiologist to evaluate and focus on areas of concern.
Mammography appointments are available at the Hospital on Monday thru Thursday, 7 a.m.-8 p.m., Friday 7 a.m.-4 p.m., and Saturday 7 a.m.-3:30 p.m. At FMH Outpatient Services in Livermore Falls, appointments are offered Monday thru Friday, from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
Self-referred mammography appointments are accepted, even though the majority of mammography appointments are made by medical practices for their patients.
For an appointment, contact the FMH Radiology Department at 779-2405 or 1-800-398-6031, ext. 2405. For an appointment at the Livermore Falls facility call 897-2600.
The Martha B. Webber Breast Care Center provides comprehensive breast care and timely access to screening, diagnostic, clinical, and care-support services. In addition to mammography, the Center offers risk assessment, breast ultrasound, stereotactic needle biopsy, physical therapy including lymphedema treatment, surgical services, post-operative care support, wig and prosthesis referrals, and community education.
