Work Healthy!
The Healthy Community Coalition (HCC) of Greater Franklin County would like to introduce you to Work Healthy! a free program where businesses and organizations can win an award and media recognition for having and promoting healthy worksite policies and practices.
The HCC Workplace Award recognizes businesses and organizations within Greater Franklin County that have placed a high priority promoting good health for their employees. By supporting tobacco-free lifestyle, encouraging physical activity and/or promoting healthy eating, businesses and organizations may realize the benefits of a healthier workforce including reduced absenteeism, reduced disability costs, reduced health care costs, and improved productivity. HCC, a Healthy Maine Partnership, is using the successful Work Healthy! program developed by Healthy Androscoggin, the Healthy Maine Partnership in Androscoggin County, to promote worksite wellness.
Qualifying for a Work Healthy! award is easy to do, engages staff, and has many benefits. You may already qualify if your organization has a written tobacco–free policy, offers healthy food choices, or promotes health and wellness in a variety of ways. Staff from the Healthy Community Coalition can provide sample policies and technical assistance to help you qualify for an award.
Please take the time to look over the attached brochure and apply for the award. Share your ideas and learn from others. We can all work together to improve the health of our workforce and our community.
Please contact the Healthy Community Coalition for information or questions.

Reducing Heart Disease Using a Gender-Based Approach at Worksites
HCC was awarded a grant from the Office of Women’s Health to address the issue of high blood pressure and heart disease in the worksite setting. Using a gender-based approach, HCC is using three strategies to address the issue:
- Health Education – Includes HCC driven campaigns focused on nutrition, physical activity, blood pressure/cholesterol, and stress. Health education also includes a GOAL group, which is an 8 week program that promotes developing a supportive network of peers, setting small health goals, and learning the basic components of disease prevention.
- Clinical Intervention – Includes a self-reported health risk assessment form (ScoreHealth) and a blood pressure screening performed by HCC staff. The ScoreHealth form is entered into a database. As a result, HCC staff is able to provide participating worksites with ongoing data on the overall health risks seen in their employees.
- Policy Development – Encourages program sustainability through the development of a worksite policy that will provide at least one annual blood pressure screening day a year for employees. Worksites will also be trained and provided with the equipment to offer blood pressure screenings at will.
