Located on the on the 3rd floor of the hospital is the progressive Intensive Care Unit that focuses on evidence-based medicine. Thi ICU provides medical care and observation to people in a critical or unstable condition whose condition is potentially reversible (heart attack, respiratory failure, surgical complications). Acutely ill patients requiring constant observation and intensive nursing care are admitted to the unit, which is equipped with the most advanced life support devices. Nurses who are specially trained to cope with serious medical situations staff the unit.
ICU features include a remote intensive care unit monitoring system called Franklin eICU that helps doctors and nurses monitor and improve patient care. With eICU technology our patients are linked with MaineHealth VitalNetwork’s critical care team of intensivists (physicians trained in the care of the critically ill) and critical care nurses at its center in Portland.
The new technology does not replace the hands-on care provided by staff at Franklin Memorial, but rather provides electronic monitoring of patient conditions around the clock. It also allows our doctors and nurses to collaborate with a second team of critical care specialists who are affiliated with Maine Medical Center.
